How the tiebreakers work
FIFA’s Golden Boot tiebreakers, in order: (1) goals, (2) assists, (3) fewest minutes played. Messi leads outright on goals (8, ahead of Mbappé and Haaland on 7 and Kane on 6), so the tiebreakers only come into play if his lead is caught. (FIFA tournament rules.)
If Messi fails to add to his tally across the next two rounds and a chaser draws level on goals, the assist and minutes tiebreakers decide the order — which is why the next goal, from any of the four, matters as much as the raw count.
