What happened on 8 July
Wednesday was a scheduled rest day between the Round of 16 and the quarter-finals. No fixtures, no fresh results, no bracket movement — but plenty of news cycle:
- All eight quarter-finalists are confirmed and resting.
- The Argentine refereeing crew appointment for QF1 (France–Morocco) is the main off-pitch story; the Egyptian FA has separately filed a FIFA complaint over Argentina’s R16.

Egypt vs Argentina — the referee row
The Egyptian FA filed a formal complaint with FIFA after the 3–2 R16 loss to Argentina on 7 July, alleging "serious refereeing mistakes" by referee François Letexier — a VAR-disallowed Egypt goal and two un-reviewed penalty claims, including a Salah incident in the box.
