The Golden Ball was the one award where the pre-final favourite lost. Messi finished with 8 goals and 4 assists across the tournament but was held scoreless in the final. Rodri, playing as Spain’s captain and midfield anchor, won the vote.

The Kiwi angle
For punters who backed Messi on the Golden Ball at 1.11, it was the tournament’s costliest surprise. Rodri at 11.0 was barely on the radar before the final. Every other major market settled as expected: Spain won the tournament (favourite, 1.67), Mbappé the Golden Boot (heavy favourite, 1.04), Simón the Golden Glove (favourite, 1.13). Only the Golden Ball delivered the shock.
